Completing Your Outline
What is the purpose of the outline?
Your outline is to map out the information you will be using in your body paragraphs (the middle paragraphs of your paper). Organizing your outline will make it easier to write your research paper.
What do you do on the outline?
1. Make sure you have your 3 subtopics (subtopics are your main arguments for your thesis statement)
2. Write topic sentences for each of your subtopics. (Topic sentence is the first sentence of your subtopic paragraph that explains what your subtopic is.)
3. Go through your fact cards and number them 1-20+.
4. Cut up your fact cards and start to sort them into separate subtopic piles.
5. Organize your subtopic fact card piles into separate pieces of evidence (you may have some facts that go with each other - keep them together!)
6. Write down the evidence, or what information you plan on writing about. (don't write all of it, just a note about it!)
7. Write down the fact card numbers where it says "Fact Cards:", so that you will remember which card you got the evidence from.

I don't know what to put down for evidence on my outline!
Evidence is basically what you have on your fact cards - don't rewrite the entire note, just the basics.
Example:
Fact Card - 215 people died in the storm
Evidence - Storm cost lives
It is a way to quickly organize your thoughts about your subtopics.
